More Comfort. Better Foot Hold. More Efficient Pedaling.
A great cycling shoe has one deceptively difficult job: securely hold the foot in place while still allowing it to move naturally during thousands of pedal strokes. For years, many performance cycling shoes approached this challenge by simply wrapping the foot as tightly as possible. While that created a secure connection to the pedals, it often came at the expense of comfort, especially during long rides when feet naturally expand under load.
SHIMANO has always approached the problem differently. The original SHIMANO DYNALAST shoe technology platform was developed to reduce muscular strain by optimizing foot position and lowering toe spring, helping riders pedal more efficiently while reducing fatigue over long distances. It became the foundation of Shimano's performance road, gravel, and cross-country footwear for more than a decade.
Now Shimano has taken that philosophy one step further. Introducing SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0, the next evolution of SHIMANO's performance shoe platform. Built from years of rider feedback, extensive biomechanical research, and thousands of three-dimensional foot scans, SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 delivers a more refined balance of comfort, foot stability, and pedaling efficiency than ever before.

Rethinking the Relationship Between Comfort and Performance
For decades, conventional wisdom held that a tighter-fitting cycling shoe was a faster cycling shoe. The goal was to eliminate foot movement at all costs. But as cycling has evolved, and as riders spend longer hours in the saddle across road, gravel, and cross-country disciplines, that philosophy has changed.
Today's riders want more than pure race-day performance. They also expect long-ride comfort, better fit, and shoes that accommodate a wider variety of foot shapes without sacrificing efficiency. Additionally, bike fitters and retailers consistently told SHIMANO that many riders wanted more room in the forefoot, particularly around the toes. Some cyclists were even sizing up simply to gain additional toe space, even though the longer shoe compromised overall foot hold and pedaling efficiency.

Understanding the Pedal Stroke
Before redesigning the lasts, SHIMANO first wanted to better understand how a cyclist's foot behaves inside a shoe. Engineers digitally analyzed riders throughout the pedal stroke, using pressure mapping and biomechanical data to identify exactly where the foot remained stable and where unwanted movement or excessive pressure occurred.
Rather than simply measuring foot dimensions, SHIMANO studied how the foot changed under pedaling load. This research helped engineers answer critical questions, such as how much toe room is needed to improve comfort without reducing efficiency, and how to minimize foot movement without creating pressure points. Those insights became the foundation for SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0.
More Room Where Riders Need It Most
The biggest change to SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 is also one that riders will notice immediately. More volume in the toe box. Rather than simply making every shoe larger, SHIMANO strategically increased space around the forefoot and toe joints while maintaining secure foot hold through the midfoot and heel.
The result is a shoe that allows the toes to relax and naturally spread under pedaling load without allowing unwanted movement elsewhere.
This creates several benefits:
- Reduced pressure points
- Improved long-distance comfort
- Better circulation
- Less muscular tension
- More consistent foot stability
Instead of choosing between comfort and performance, riders now get both.

A Better Fit for More Riders
Perhaps the most significant advancement in SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 isn't simply additional toe volume, it's a dramatically expanded fit range. Using thousands of three-dimensional foot scans, SHIMANO found that previous wide-fit shoes still didn't accommodate many riders, particularly those with naturally broad forefeet. The demand for truly wide cycling shoes exceeded expectations.
To address this, SHIMANO completely redesigned the last architecture. Instead of sharing one outsole across fit options, SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 uses dedicated Narrow, Standard, and Wide lasts, allowing each fit to be optimized independently and providing much greater separation between fit options.
Standard Fit
The new Standard last maintains a secure midfoot while increasing toe width by approximately 3 mm, creating roughly 4% more toe volume without changing instep volume.
Wide Fit
The biggest transformation comes in the Wide fit. Compared to the previous generation, the toe box is approximately 6 mm wider and offers approximately 7% greater toe volume, creating what SHIMANO describes as a "much wider wide.” This means riders who previously had to size up simply for forefoot comfort can now choose a shoe that better matches their actual foot length.
Narrow Fit
The new Narrow last also benefits from the updated forefoot shape. While maintaining a lower-volume overall fit, it provides slightly more room around the toes than previous SHIMANO narrow options, giving riders another refined fit choice. For many women and riders who preferred the previous Women's-specific fit, the new Narrow option may provide the closest match.
Why Foot Hold Still Matters
More toe room doesn't mean a looser shoe. SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 was engineered to improve foot hold where it matters most while allowing greater freedom where the foot naturally expands.
SHIMANO's Surround Wrapping Upper works together with the new last shape to securely cradle the foot around the midfoot and heel while reducing unnecessary pressure across the forefoot. This balanced approach minimizes internal foot movement during hard efforts while maintaining long-ride comfort for smoother power transfer, greater stability, and a more connected feeling between rider and bike.

Choosing the Right SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 Fit
Because SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 introduces new last shapes and significantly more forefoot volume, some riders may find their ideal fit differs from that of previous generations of SHIMANO cycling shoes. The goal isn't simply to provide more room, it's to better match the natural shape of a wider range of feet while maintaining the secure foot hold that efficient pedaling demands.
For riders currently wearing SHIMANO shoes, here's what to expect:
Standard
If you've been happy with the fit of your current Standard DYNALAST shoes, the new Standard fit will feel familiar through the midfoot and heel while providing noticeably more room around the toes for improved comfort on long rides.
Wide
If you've worn Wide DYNALAST shoes in the past, be aware that DYNALAST 2.0 Wide is significantly wider than the previous Wide fit. Riders who truly need extra forefoot volume will appreciate the increased width, while others may find that the new Standard fit now provides all the room they need.
Narrow
Riders who previously rode SHIMANO's Women's-specific models or those who prefer an especially snug fit will generally find that the new Narrow fit offers the closest equivalent. The Narrow last maintains a lower-volume fit while benefiting from the updated toe shape and improved forefoot comfort introduced with DYNALAST 2.0.
Note that if you've historically sized up simply to gain more forefoot width, DYNALAST 2.0 may allow you to return to your true foot length. Thanks to the increased toe volume and wider fit options, many riders may find that sizing down by approximately a half size provides a better balance of comfort, support, and pedaling efficiency.
Ultimately, the best cycling shoe is one that securely supports the heel and midfoot while allowing the toes enough room to relax naturally under load. DYNALAST 2.0 was engineered to achieve exactly that balance, giving more riders a truly dialed-in fit without compromising the efficient power transfer SHIMANO footwear is known for.
Optimal Fit for Everyone
Whether you’re a WorldTour pro or simply enjoy cruising with friends on the weekends, the same performance principles apply. A better-fitting shoe helps every rider pedal more comfortably and more efficiently.
By combining decades of biomechanical research with extensive fit data, SHIMANO has refined one of the most important contact points between rider and bicycle. The result is a cycling shoe platform that better accommodates today's riders, supports a wider variety of foot shapes, and delivers the ideal balance of secure foot hold, long-distance comfort, and efficient power transfer. Because when your feet feel better, every pedal stroke gets just a little bit better too.
